What I have learned from this unit 14 , coursebooks and lesson materials is that every book has it likes and dislikes but schools should have books and materials that teachers could need, however sometimes teachers have to create their own material to either supplement the course book. For many students the material created by the teacher are more interesting, more relevant and a welcome change from the coursebook.
These materials can be divided into two groups, authentic materials and created materials. Anything a native speaker would hear or read can be described as authentic, such as programs, magazines, newspapers etc. The advantages of using an authentic materials are that they are real and more interesting and motivating, the students gain confidence when they understand them. By the other hand, created materials are usually designed by the teacher to supplement materials from a coursebook, such as crossword, role play cards, flash cards. Etc.
I have learned that course books consist of a set of materials: students book, workbook, audio, teachers book, in some cases a video, other published materials include reading books, learner dictionary and vocabulary flash cards. The course book advantages are it is usually expected by the students, it provides a syllabus which is graded to the students level, it provides security for students and teachers alike. And some other course book disadvantages are: it does not always fit the specific needs and interests of all the class members. The students may not like the book and might not want to use it. Then the best use of course books: do not use the course book for whole lesson. When planning your lesson, think about which items will motivate your students, and which need to be supplemented, adapted or replaced. There are four different options for the course book use: omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
