Camanche, Iowa TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The unit began by covering the difference between new groups and existing groups of students going in depth by discussing how new groups are not yet comfortable with the learning environment and the need for the teacher to establish rapport with the students as well as rapport between the students themselves so as to make the environment more comfortable. This first section went over a list of activities that are useful in achieving this goal (questionnaire/survey, needs analysis, pass the ball game, etc). Next the unit covered the concept of warmers as activities that are used to get the students motivated to use and learn English in class as well as providing example activities (Hangman, pictionary, memory games, etc). The unit then goes into considerations the teacher needs to reconcile such as students who are different levels of comprehension of English (providing different materials or same materials but different tasks, pairing stronger and weaker students together, etc) as well as the troubles that come with a large class size (catering to all the individual needs of a large group of students, [using worksheets, assigning group leaders, etc). The unit then built upon this by elaborating on what to do in instances where students feel more inclined to use their native language (make sure material is appropriate for the students comprehension level and that instructions are clearly explained to avoid confusion among the students, only respond in English to student questions, etc). Finally the unit concluded by going over tips on dealing with reluctant students (use pair work, role play, controlled practice, etc) as well as emphasizing the importance of using listening texts to improve student listening skills and how to proceed with a lesson when some students finish activities faster than other students (providing fun extra work such as word searches). Overall this unit provided me with a litany of different tips and ideas for dealing with common problems and situations that English teachers will experience in the classroom.
