In the classroom teachers might encounter different problems concerning motivation, English knowledge levels, class size, comprehension and so on. In the last unit I have learned how to deal with them. On the very first lessons the highest priority for teacher is not to actually teach, but to get to know students and build the rapport with them. There are lots of ideas for teachers to use: pass the ball game, needs analysis, survey and so on. In the beginning of the lesson students need to be warmed up and motivated. Hangman, Pictionary and memory games can help with that. If students are of different English levels, there are many approaches on how to deal with that, however it might be effective to mix them up. Large classes also require a special approach. Teachers should use worksheets, a lot of pair and group work, choral drills to maximize the number of students participating. If some students refuse to participate or show no initiative, teachers can involve them in pair work and role plays to provide a safe environment for practice. Another tip is avoid usage of students' mother tongue, however make sure to provide clear instructions and the activities are appropriate for the students' English level. Listening tasks usually appear to be difficult for all students, so pre teaching potentially difficult vocabulary can be helpful.
