This unit explains the roles and characteristics of good teachers and learners. Teachers need to be kind and patient, motivating, have a good knowledge of their subject, really love teaching and be able to correct their students without offending them, as well as knowing their weaknesses (amongst other things). They need to be able to perform many roles like manager, organiser, facilitator, tutor, participant, assessor, observer and model.
A good students really wants to learn, is willing to listen to the language, experiment with it, ask questions, is willing to be corrected and to think about their own learning process. Adult students are usually more motivated because they choose to learn English themselves, they have more learning experience, life experience but might be more nervous than children. Children, divided in very young (under 7), primary school age (8-12) and teenage (12-18) age groups, are often less motivated, but more willing to experiment with the language and more receptive to new words and grammar.
Levels of proficiency range from Beginner to Advanced, or A1 (Breakthrough) to C2 (Mastery).
