This unit is a an overview of the varying methodologies used for English language learning, beginning with the classical method, one of the oldest teaching models and ending with an explanation of the current ESA model, as developed by Jeremy Harmer. The ESA method and its techniques encourage a high level of communication between students. It also creates a learning environment where students are both engaged and informed so that motivation levels remain high, preventing boredom. It is a less teacher based method than other models such as the grammar/translation model. ESA techniques such as a patchwork or a boomerang lesson also prevent predictability. Correction methods are constructive and serve to encourage students to discover and experiment with the language. In the Activity phase students take a less structured approach to learning, with teachers encouraging fluency rather than accuracy. The result should be students learning a more natural form of the language.
