Books, authentic material, and created material are all helpful when creating and implementing a lesson plan. As a new teacher, I have found that using all three can be valuable, depending on the specific needs of the students and their learning styles. Many students who are working on developing their listening skills, for example, benefit from listening to TED Talks on YouTube, while intermediate and beginner-level students often benefit from grammar books (with exercises) and worksheets that I have either made or developed myself. It is important to know the learning needs of each student (or class) in order to determine which resources are best for them.
As another note, collaborating with other teachers and sharing created material (and then adapting that material to fit lessons / the needs of students) is an excellent way to build stronger lessons!
