This lesson covered the various levels of language learners as well as reasons they might be learning. Up until now I have solely thought of myself as a teacher for children learning English. I never realized there was such a great need for teachers to teach English to company workers and businessmen. After reading that portion of the chapter I immediately felt unqualified to teach business English because of my lack of knowledge within the business world. However, the unit made it clear that the teacher is the English expert and the businessmen are the business experts. Also, I read time and time again the importance of NOT using the student's native language in the classroom. The unit described a scenario in which the student gave up on listening to English and instead waited until the teacher caved and spoke in their native tongue. As a foreign language student myself I realized that I am guilty of having thought like this. I hope to not fall into the temptation of using the student's native language as an easy way out for both parties involved.
