Unit Ten was about Teaching Receptive Skills. Four basic skills are needed for learning a new language: reading and listening which are receptive skills and speaking and writing which are productive skills. All 4 skills are equally important and must be integrated into an interesting and effective lesson. Students use receptive skills to read and listen for a purpose or for pleasure. Problems with this might involve encountering long or unfamiliar words or long sentences. The solution is to pre-teach a little of the more challenging bits and then let the students discover the meanings of other bits on their own. When using a text, make sure it is interesting and varied. When attempting to activate the students, choose activities that naturally flow from the text you chose to teach from.
