There are many types of teaching settings and students that an English teacher may run into. Each type of group may require different skills and different approaches to learning the language. Beginners - those who are new or unfamiliar to English. There are many subgroups of beginners: 1. the absolute beginner (no English at all) 2. the false beginner (knowledge of a few simple structures) 3. the adult beginner 4. the young beginner 5. the beginner without a Roman alphabet Tips for teaching beginners - Don't overdo it. These students are new to the language and needn't be scared off, so don't over-correct them. Don't be surprised if they are learning more quickly or slower than you would expect and adapt to what they need. Lots of encouragement, repetition, and practice is important. Don't be afraid to assign homework. Teaching individual students is on the rise. These students are usually very motivated and learning can be streamlined since you are only tailoring to that individual's needs. Since it is different from the classroom dynamic, the teacher usually ends up being the student's partner throughout the lessons. The teacher can also use the student's interests and experiences for the lessons, which may make the time more enjoyable for the student and give him or her more motivation to learn. Teaching children is known for being the most rewarding class to teach because of their curiosity. It is important to stick to English so students don't give up. You also need to speak slowly and in short sentences. Don't take the classroom too seriously; make fun of yourself from time to time and keep the activities fun and simple. Be sure to adapt to any problems that may arise, such as attention seeking students and boredom. Most problems in the classroom can be solved aside from a student with problems outside of the classroom. Remember to never raise your voice, threaten students, or play favorites. Teaching business English is common today because English is the universal language of business. Clients of a wide range of age may come in eager to learn English for business or may be required by their job to learn the language. It is important to conduct a needs analysis to figure out what the students must learn English for in their jobs. This can be done with a simple questionnaire, going over what the client already knows, what their weaknesses may be, and what they are interested in learning. Be aware that businesspeople may be very tired after working all day, and may miss a lot of lessons. Some people may not be motivated if their job is requiring them to go to lessons, but most people in this setting want to learn. Also, try to learn about the company and the client's field to better enhance your lessons. Monolingual classes are typically taking place in the students' home country. This means that students may lose motivation at times to speak in English if they all understand each other in their native tongue. When students all speak the same native language, though, they typically struggle with similar aspects of English. This makes it easier for the teacher to pinpoint certain skills. The teacher can also find topics that most students have some interest in since they are of the same cultural background. Try to make sure students don't slack off and speak in their mother tongue as it will be easy for them to do so. Multilingual classes have students from varying nationalities. These classes can be beneficial because students only have one common language: English. Since the students are from different cultures, they can also bring different ideas to the classroom. Students in multilingual classes are also usually taking these classes in a country where English is the native language. This means the student will gain exposure every day to the language and has ample opportunity to practice English.
