This unit covers cultural differences, the age of learners and expectations, the characteristics of a good teacher and student, classification of language levels, things that motivate language learners and the various roles a teacher may play in the classroom. One of the most important things I learned from the unit is the significance of being aware of cultural differences. For example, as an ESL teacher to children in Bejing, China, being aware of Chinese culture and knowing that Chinese students don't often receive praise for academic achievements and the importance of providing positive praise and reinforcement to help motivate them. In addition, knowing that they are shy by nature and not talking doesn't mean they don't understand. Therefore, it is not only important to know what you are teaching but also the culture of those you are teaching.
