This unit is about teaching communication skills, defining receptive and productive skills, and focusing on teaching the two elements of receptive skills - reading and listening. We use receptive skills for two motives, one being for a purpose and the other for entertainment. Our ability to recognize and understand words and their overall meaning coupled with our own pre-existing understanding of the world, our experiences and our influences affect how we read and listen. As teachers we must get to know the students in order to keep them interested in the topics for learning and also understand their culture and experiences in order to properly relate grammar rules, circumstances for understanding words, and proper vocabulary usages.
