Unit 20 discusses problems teachers can have with teaching first lessons, finding good starter activities to get students motivated, and dealing with different levels, large classes and the use of native language.
For first lessons it is important to establish rapport with the students and to get to know as much as possible about them (and allow them to get to know the teacher).
For the beginning of lessons it helps to start with "warmer" activities (games mostly) that get students motivated and makes them use English in a fun and uncomplicated way.
Different levels in a class can mean the teacher needs to divide the class up, give different exercises or pair strong students with weaker ones. However, it can also work to just do nothing and let weaker students catch up.
Large classes can be handled by assigning group leaders, giving very clear instructions (so the teacher doesn't have to be everywhere at once to monitor and assist) and use choral repetition.
Native language use should be discouraged in class as much as possible and as a teacher you only answer in English.
