Unit 13 on Teaching Pronunciation & Phonology explains the importance of teaching pronunciation to language learners. It laments that for various reasons, pronunciation and phonology are often relegated to the sidelines in the teaching of languages even though these are topics that most language learners are concerned with. The unit provides a broad overview of intonation, sound, rhythm, stress, and phonetics. From its content, I was able to review the rules in putting stress on words, the typical intonation in sentences, and the phonetic symbols as a pronunciation guide. This unit inspired me to further study how to best teach pronunciation and phonology to non-native English speakers.
