This final unit covered some common problems a teacher may come up against when teaching a class of English learners. The first lesson, for example, will require the teacher to establish rapport with the class, and if the class is a new class they will need to establish rapport with each other. This can be achieved by avoiding course book activities for the first lesson, and instead engaging in activities which help everyone get to know each other. Similarly, no class should ever be opened by diving cold into the first activity. Teachers should use 'warmers' or small activities to get the juices flowing, at the start of a class. If a teacher is leading a mixed ability class, they may which to adapt activities so that students of higher ability do slightly different tasks which are more suited to their language level. Alternatively, the teacher may not adapt the activities and instead pair lower ability students with higher ability students to help them catch up. Other challenges which this unit covers are what to do if there is a large class, how to minimise students using their native language, and how to encourage reluctant students to participate.
