This unit covered the use of course books and lesson materials. Materials can be authentic or created. Authentic materials are 'real life' materials that would be encountered by a native speaker of the target language. This could be newspaper or radio reports, novels, TV shows etc. Created materials are constructed specifically with language learners in mind, and so the level of language will be carefully controlled. The text may also contain key vocabulary or grammar points for the learner to practice. While authentic texts can be good for giving students a real taste of the language they are learning, and can cover interesting and up to date topics, created texts are usually more appropriate for language learners as they can be matched to the correct level and therefore be more helpful and less discouraging.
