Unit 19 discusses teaching specific groups. Needs for different categories of learners are obviously different and as teacher you want your lesson to be as student centered as possible, so it is good to consider the needs (and wants) of different groups.
- beginners will need a slow and very clear approach from you. Don't go too fast, keep your instructions very clear, be aware of their needs, don't over correct.
- teaching individual students allows you to focus on their specific needs and interests. However, the lessons will miss interaction like in a class with multiple students and the teacher constantly needs to be the students' practice partner as well as teacher.
- for children it is important to keep their attention focused (they have limited attention spans, so don't let activities drag on). Also, be prepared to be funny and make sure you repeat and rehearse a lot. Discipline is important; it is easier to become more lenient later than to try to regain control.
- business English classes should be focused on the specific needs of the clients, so you need to find out what their work entails and what exactly they need English for. Use a needs analysis and make sure to evaluate with the clients.
