Unit 16 is an introduction to conditionals and reported speech. The different types of conditionals are observed with their forms and usages. Teaching ideas such as split sentences, chain conditionals or role play games can help alleviate confusion whilst maintaining the students attention. Recorded speech and direct speech also hold difficulty for students who need to understand the change in verb tenses when changing direct speech to indirect speech. Explaining time expressions to students with the use of charts and visual observation of how speech moves forward and backward on a time line may help with clarity. Again teaching exercises such as reporting verbs or media interviews could be the best method to explain difficult language items to students.
