This unit discussed the importance of evaluating students second language. English is a complicated language and for most ESL learners it is important to know where to place them and test them to see if they are making progress in learning the second language. This unit discussed the different types of testing and evaluation tools that a teacher can use in the classroom. It also gave reasons why students study for formal and external tests in English. As an educator, it is important to show students growth. A placement test should be given to all students at the beginning of the school year to place students in groups at the same level. Or a diagnostic test that can tell what the student knows and doesn't know. As the year progresses, the students are given progress tests to evaluate their learning. With the course of the year, students take practice tests to evaluate if they are meeting their goals. By the end of the year, the student can take an achievement test or an internal test to measure their proficiency in English. Testing and Evaluation are essential to each child's learning and can be a great indicator for student growth.
