The three main ways to asses the language level of students is by tutorials, evaluations by students, and tests. Tutorials involve going over what the students have learned recently, what the lesson goals were, and if the students met those goals. Student evaluations are more focused on the students' comments/concerns about the class. This can be helpful because students have the opportunity to voice what they want to learn, and they may feel more motivated knowing that the teacher cares about their input. Lastly is testing, which is the most concrete way of knowing if students grasped information from the course. There is a lot of debate over testing since some students are great in the classroom but don't do so well on paper, but it must be done to some extent, especially to have a record of students' progress. Types of tests: 1. Placement tests - usually multiple choice, used to place students in the correct class that matches the students' capabilities. 2. Progress tests - usually will balance all skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), these exams are given periodically by teachers to see what language skills have been retained by students and what language skills need to be reviewed. 3. Diagnostic tests - similar to placement tests but typically more extensive, given at the beginning of a course to see what students already know and what areas they might struggle in 4. Practice tests - used for students to become familiar with an external exam they are preparing for so they can do as well as possible 5. External examinations - these are official examinations with proctors that must be taken by non-native English speakers in order to qualify for something specific. For example, the TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is required by most American universities to show that non-native speakers will be able to understand coursework and be a satisfactory student upon attending the school.
