Although linguists will note only two tenses, teachers should recognize that there are more. This unit dealt with present tenses, their form, and different usages: Present simple to talk about routines, permanent situations and facts, commentaries, directions and instructions, headlines, stories, and historical sequences. Present continuous to talk about actions in progress at the time of speaking, temporary actions, to emphasize frequent actions, and to describe developing situations. Present perfect, to talk about general experiences, completed past actions, something that began in the past and is still happening, and past actions with present results. Finally, the unit gives some typical student errors and some ideas for the Activate stage in the classroom.
