Unit 5 describes the essentials of managing a classroom. It explains how eye contact, gestures and voice can effectively be used to engage, encourage, activate and check students and to communicate with them effectively. Different ways of grouping students are explained: whole-class grouping, students working on their own, pairs and groups. Each type of grouping is suitable for different work and of course what works depends on many more factors. The classroom can be arranged in rows, circles and horseshoes or separate tables, giving different levels of intimacy and student engagement amongst themselves. How and when to write on the board and how to give individual attention to students is explained. Teacher talking time is important to give students exposure to the language but should also be kept low. To give instructions, the teacher has to use simple language, be consistent, use visuals when necessary and make sure the students understand the instructions. Establishing rapport and maintaining discipline are important in managing a successful class and problems with student behaviour should be addressed properly and timely.
