Hennepin, Indiana TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
There are many different methodologies used to teach students a foreign language. There is no methodology that is better than another, however. In reality, it may be best to use all of the methods interchangeably in your teaching. What is most important is that your students are in a comfortable, low-stress learning environment, are exposed to as much English as possible, and are receiving the encouragement they need from the teacher.
ESA (engage, study, activate) is a method used universally for new teachers and is highly effective in the classroom. There are endless activities in each stage, so here is a broad explanation of each stage:
1. Engage - Encourage students to interact and use English with a fun warmup, such as a game. There should not be any new material taught in this stage and students should not be corrected, just praised for using the language.
2. Study - This is when the teacher should be introducing new material to students. It should start by eliciting the class and demonstrating the new material on the board, followed by pronunciation lessons if needed, and then handing out an exercise/worksheet to ensure they are absorbing the information. After completing the exercises, it is important to review with the class and cover any mistakes/errors with students.
3. This is where students are supposed to "show what they know." With some sort of activity, students should communicate freely to reinforce the material they have just learned. This can be by making a poster, a role-play, or many other options. Teachers should switch up activities in the activate stage so students don't get bored and can stay creative.
