In Unit 12, I learned about the productive skills: speaking and writing. Like the receptive skills, both speaking and writing are equally important as students should be able to completely understand words and their context. Writing is majorly neglected because it calls to have the students work alone, and it is mostly left as a homework assignment. It is very important though, because when writing, we do not have copious amounts of time to think of responses or words, so students should be comfortable making words in written form. It is also sometimes hard to encourage students to learn if they are not comfortable speaking in front of pears, they are afraid to make mistakes, or they are confused about what is happening. This is why making sure the class topics are varied and class level appropriate is very important. The students should feel they can make mistakes and learn comfortably in the classroom, and it’s the teacher’s responsibility to make sure that happens.
