This unit provides an overview of selection and use of course books and materials. It describes authentic materials, such as newspaper articles or song lyrics, and created materials, such as flash cards or worksheets. The unit gives a guideline of what to think about when choosing a course book and also provides many sample lesson materials. There are many advantages to using a published textbook, but also disadvantages. Often, textbooks are out of date and can be uninteresting to students. However, textbooks also provide a stable, proven starting point from which to build a lesson, and many students expect them anyway.
