Thanks to this unit, I’ve reviewed my school knowledge of grammar. Parts of speech explain how a word is used in a sentence. There are eight main parts of speech (also known as word classes): nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections (which wasn’t actually mentioned in this unit). The authors did mention gerunds, although gerunds are verbals. A verbal is a word formed from a verb but functioning as a different part of speech.
