This unit highlighted the two receptive skills, reading and listening, and ways to keep students engaged and interested in the material in order to motivate them to absorb and comprehend the material. Not only do we take in information by reading and listening, but our minds play a huge role in reading and listening comprehension. This unit covered the different types of comprehension, such as predictive skills and info-scanning, and how we process information. It is important to pre-teach difficult vocabulary to students before a reading or listening activity so that they can follow along and understand the material. This allows them to stay motivated and maintain confidence in their receptive skills. When it comes to selecting texts, a combination of non-authentic and authentic material can add variety to the class, especially if the selected material contains topics that are interesting and exciting to the class.
