This unit covered the parts of speech in English. These are nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, and prepositions/conjunctions. Knowing these allows us to effectively analyse any sentence in English on a grammatical level. This structure also provides an effective guide for teaching, especially with intermediate students who may be discouraged by their comparative lack of visible progress compared with when they were beginners. Being able to refer back to the parts of speech could be a good point of reference to help point out progress. For example, 'Look, you're beginning to understand how to use gerunds, which is something that you did not even know about 3 months ago.'
