Unit 18 covers modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs and the passive voice. The basic rules for modals are outlined as is the way in which they can express obligation, probability, ability, possibility or advice. Using modals to express different degrees of formality or to change the meaning of a sentence is also outlined. Teaching ideas such as role play or guessing signs could be useful ways to introduce the way modals affect speech to students. Differences between the passive and active voice and how a sentence shifts focus depending on what form is used, may be difficult to explain to students. Student errors such as leaving out the verb "to be" could be addressed by teaching methods such as cutting up sentences to be arranged again by students, either in passive or active forms. Relative clauses with the the categories, independent, dependent and defining relative and non defining relative are also explained. The use or non use of commas in relative clauses differentiates between essential or non essential information in a sentence. Phrasal verbs are defined as multi word verbs or verbs with one or two particles. The three basic types Intransitive, Transitive, Transitive Inseparable are discussed. Teachers are encouraged to keep a record of phrasal verbs used in controlled conversation in order to drop into language used in the classroom, so that students can be exposed to this form of speech naturally.
