In this unit, I have learned the E.S.A methodology towards English teaching, That is to use engagement, study and activation . The engage stage is used to get the students interested and to get them thinking, Mainly through elicitation. The study component of a lesson is the more rigid part, focusing on the students internalizing a certain language point that has been covered. Last but not least is the activation stage where students are compelled by an activity to use already known language as well as language points that have just been covered with the focus of the activity being fluency, not accuracy. I have also learned that these phases of learning can be shifted in their order to stray from straight arrow, into patch and boomerang lesson plans. This unit has also given me insight on feedback and correction. Correction should be kept to a minimum during the E and A stages, soas not to break the flow of the activity and in these cases correction should only be done under extreme circumstances. Also that a student shod be given a chance to correct himself by providing him with the location and nature of his error. Then a chance for student to student correction and lastly a teacher to student correction if the other methods fail to achieve results or if the student has a tendency to be uncomfortable as the last thing we want is a drop in their motivation.
