This unit explains the systems and structures which support the tense system as it relates to the past tenses. As with the present tenses we are taught past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous in their affirmative, negative and question form. Usages are explained and common mistakes are outlined. Recognizing common mistakes such as confusing past perfect continuous with the past perfect is helpful, especially when students may not use the language often enough to simply know what is correct. An error by a student raises the opportunity for detailed instructions on how to separate the one tense from the other in a effort to obtain a gradual feel for the language.
