Lesson planning is useful for those who are beginning their careers as teachers. It helps add structure that the teacher can use to keep the learning objectives that he/she plans to accomplish for the lesson clear and gives them a reference to keep in mind the order of the phases, the timing for each phase or section of the phase, the balance of the skills and that the lesson flows smoothly. Some basic principles that should be kept in mind when making a lesson plan are that it should be simple and clear so that it can be used as an effective reference and that it isn't scripted. It needs to have a structure, but this needs to be flexible so that the teacher may adapt to any changes that may occur.
A lesson plan should typically include twelve to thirteen specific points in its construction:
1. The learner's objective keeps what the teacher wants the students to be able to do after the class in focus.
2. What the teacher wishes to improve about their technique.
3. The language point keeps the theme in mind and how it fits in with past and planned future lessons.
4. What teaching aids and/or materials that the teacher will need for the lesson.
5. Any anticipated problems that either the teacher or the students may have with the lesson.
6. The activities that are used to achieve the learner's objective.
7. The phase set-up (E-S-A, E-A-S-A, etc.).
8. The timing needed for each section/phase.
9. Who's interacting in each section/phase(individual, S-T, or S-S).
10. The level of ability that the class has with the English language.
11. The number of students in the class.
12. The date and time of the lesson to keep accurate historical records.
13. The teacher's and/or observer's name/s if the class is being monitored.
Once the lesson plan is made, one can still do things to ensure that they are organised and ready for the class period, such as doing a dry-run of the lesson plan and double- checking that it is, together with any materials or teaching aids you need, running smoothly and that you have made it accessible for the lesson. You can also prepare or clean the board, depending on what the lesson requires, and e ready to greet the students as they begin to arrive to help break the ice and get them in the mood to learn.
