During the first lesson it is important to approach the class with a clear context of what has been taught to the students, whether this is their first day of class or in the middle of certain material. A rapport must be built up with the students using various activities and a positive and friendly attitude. The teacher should learn the students' names as well as their language abilities as soon as possible. When there is a large gap in the difference in abilities between students in the same class, stronger students could be paired with weaker students. Pairing also helps reluctant students as it encourages participation.
