In this unit, I learned about the usage of authentic and created materials in the classroom. Authentic materials have advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are, it boost the students confidence if they are capable of understanding, it is more interesting to the students, it can be geared to a certain set of students, and they prepare them for the real world. The disadvantages are, they are not graded to the level of the student because they are geared to native English speakers, it can be difficult at time, and contain lots of informal English. Created materials advantages are, they are graded to the level of the students, the teacher can choose what to include in the lesson, it is student focused, and it can replace or supplement materials from the book. The disadvantages are it may be boring for some students, time consuming to create the material, some of the materials are not tried and tested. I also learn about the usage of course books in the class. It also have its advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages are, students expect what is going to be taught, it is tried and tested, there is a balance in grammar, speaking, listening, reading, writing and pronunciation. Some of the disadvantages are the books may be outdated, tell what lesson to be covered, it may not cover the need of the group because it is general and not specific, it becomes boring and predictable, the teacher can become lazy and the lesson may not be suitable for the class.
