This unit is an overview of teaching the receptive skills of reading and listening and the various methods in which we employ these skills when using the English language. Different types of receptive skills such as predictive, scanning, skimming etc are tools which can be taught to students in order for them to better tackle new language structures either written or heard. Sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words are part of the difficulties which may arise for students when attempting to use receptive skills. Teachers can help students overcome these difficulties using methods such as pre teaching vocabulary. Selecting text and topics which engage the students is vital. It is important that teachers get to know their students so as to recognize which subjects will more easily hold their interest and avoid boredom. Non authentic text which is designed for specific language levels and authentic text should be used carefully in combination to create both understanding and confidence.
