This unit introduced conditionals and reported speech, and laid out the 5 types of conditional speech patterns. As conditionals can mix verb tenses, I can see why this lesson would be confusing or difficult to teacher non-native English speakers. Conditionals are typically used when reporting information, presenting hypothetical situations, and their consequences. At its core, conditionals ask an if/when question in its first half, and concludes with the effect or outcome to the if/when. As the phone situation in the lesson material shows, conditionals are common in everyday speech when recounting events or catching up with a friend.
