This was a great unit about pronunciation and phonetics, and I learned about the International Phonetic Alphabet. This system helps people, especially English language learners, learn how to pronounce words based on a set of symbols that represent different sounds. The English language is complex and can be very confusing to new students, so this system is very valuable and helpful. As teachers it is important to incorporate lessons on pronunciation when we feel it is necessary. We can show diagrams, model our own mouths, and play games with the students to slowly and gradually work on this skill. There are many places from which English and language comes from within the mouth, such as the tongue, larynx, glottis, alveolar ridge, and hard and soft palates, so it is extremely helpful to point this out to students to give them more clarity as they progress.
