Writing and Speaking are essential skills for communication. While people tend to care more about speaking than writing, writing is always associated with homework, but is important indeed and it requires more time to think and plan.
There are accurancy activities and fluency activities. While accuracy is to produce correct language, fluency the student try and experience the language. It is less concerned with accurancy and more concerned with effectiveness and flow of the communication.
The activities to be done with speaking can be divided into these categories: controlled activities when the language is controlled by the teacher. Drilling and prompting are good examples. And guided activities are accuracy based, more creative and productive and the output is controlled by the teacher but language is not.
Some students can be very intimidated with speaking activities, the teacher may experience problems like lack of confidence from students, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic or a cultural reason, for example. There are some ways to avoid these issues like the teacher could work on pair work, group work, change classroom dynamics, have a careful planning.
One of the problems related with writing can be the alphabetic system if the student came from a country that uses a different alphabet, therefore spelling can possibly be a struggle for them as well as punctuation and layout could differ a lot. One of the ways to help the students with spelling is with reading because writing requires planning and a good memory.
