This unit discussed the pros and cons of using course books and created materials. Course books have the problem of not being as authentic and much less interesting and engaging. While they have the advantage of normally being well researched and planned out, course books can also facilitate lackadaisical teaching habits if just taught verbatim. Teachers should be aware of this problem and assess they course books, and their students' abilities and needs, substituting as appropriate with created materials. Realia and photos are some of the best supplementary materials to include in a class as they can help students to understand many concepts. Additionally, some forms of realia can help engage more of the sense, rather than just sight and hearing.
