This unit was the final unit on English grammar and the one which I found the most important. It discussed modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. In my opinion, these aspects of English grammar are what can make it so confusing to learn compared to other languages. Modals are used to add meaning to the main verb and can be difficult to distinguish between even for a native English speaker as they can be used to express a number of different ideas as well as degrees of formality. The passive voice can also be difficult to understand and explain because the focus of the sentence changes and sometimes disregards the agent altogether. In a similar way, phrasal verbs are often used frequently by native speakers but may be difficult to understand by those who are not native speakers. This unit is extremely important in that it allows the students to be more aware of the unique, complicated parts of the English language that are commonly used by native speakers and may not translate directly.
