After reading unit 18, I learned about modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. While modals seems pretty easy and straightforward to native English speakers, I can see how they may present trouble for EFL students. One issue is that there are many modals that are close in meaning but with vary in degree. I like the teaching ideas for the modals. Role play, for example, is a great way for students to practice modals. A good example is for a doctor to advise a patient to rest by using the word "should". I also didn't remember what a relative clause was, so it was really nice to re-learn this subject. It was also nice to see the examples between defining and non-defining relative clauses. I also had to re-learn phrasal verbs. I found it challenging at first to see the differences between Type 2 and Type 3 phrasal verbs, so I can imagine how challenging it must be for EFL students! Overall, this unit was very educational for me and has built my confidence up more as an English teacher.
