Peck, Idaho TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Working as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Japan, I have experienced many first lessons. Coming straight from University into a teaching job without prior training, I did make many mistakes. Some first lessons, I considered a failure because of an unpolished self-introduction and this affected my rapport with these classes. Thankfully, the more lessons I did, the more comfortable I got with communicating in the classroom which improved my rapport with the students. I found it easier to build rapport with students in a new group compared to an existing group.
Unfortunately, some of my Japanese Teachers of English (JTEs) use the native language more often than not in the classroom. It’s easy to notice which teachers use the native language more by the way the students participate in classes. I used to believe that the correct approach was to use the native language more, but my opinion has changed by seeing first hand, how these classes attempt to communicate in a different language.
Teaching in a public school, there are many reluctant students; I feel that things such as group work are not enough. It’s difficult to teach unmotivated students. I have tried to appeal to their interests to convince them that English is an important language, but unfortunately, it’s a long and difficult task that I must continue to work on.
I have never experienced an issue with difficulties in listening, but I feel prepared to deal with it now.
