Lava Hot Springs, Idaho TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit started with modal auxiliary verbs which are the verbs used before other verbs to give emphasis or meaning to the primary verb. These verbs can also be used to indicate formality in necessary situations. Role-playing scenarios for Activate stage activities could be a great way to get students using modals. The textbook gave a doctor-patient example but I think coach-athlete and parent-child scenes would also work well. Unit 18 compared active and passive voice in English. Passive statements have the about the same meaning as active ones do but the focus is moved off away from the subject of the main verb. That subject then becomes the object of the secondary verb. The passive is used when who does an action is vague. Thirdly, relative clauses which are also called adjective clauses. These are dependent clauses that expounds on a noun giving more information on the subject. Dependent clauses are either defining (no commas) or non-defining (no commas). Last of all comes phrasal verbs which are multi-word verbs. These are close to slang words for me and I like the idea of introducing them to students as vocabulary. For native speakers I would imagine they get used in natural conversation to students in everyday conversation. It would be helpful to filter those in and out letting students use them on their own in context.
