The main idea I absorbed from this unit is to use the course book as scaffolding, work around the text book but mind that it relying on a text book can become redundant and may limit students. Based on my style, I feel that I would like to use a text book supplement and adapt materials, in fact this is what I currently do in my position as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Japan. I often produce extra materials to supplement the Japanese Teacher of English’s (JTE) content, usually in the form of scripts, worksheets or activities. Occasionally I’m tasked to find authentic supplementary material in the form of news clips. As a novice teacher, I feel like I would use text books as scaffolding, however certain JTEs I work with solely rely on the text book and I have seen firsthand what the results of that are, uninterested and unmotivated students.
