This unit discussed modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. Modal auxiliary verbs can be used to express obligation, possibility, permission, ability, or advice. In passive voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. The focus is different in each sentence. In active voice, the focus is on the agent. In passive, the agent is less important or doesn't appear. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. The three categories of clauses are: independent, dependent, and relative. An independent is a complete sentence; a dependent must be connected to an independent; and a relative is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles (a preposition or an adverb or an adverb plus a preposition). There are three types of phrasal verbs: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. It is important to note the differences in these in order to use them properly.
