This unit covered the methods and important points for teaching vocabulary, grammar, and function. Vocabulary selection will be guided by the textbook that teachers are using, but, many times, it will largely be up to the teacher. Therefore it is important to pick vocab that is appropriate, task oriented, frequently used, and teachable. The instructor should also follow the guidelines here for how to teach vocab. When studying grammatical structures, students will need to know what the language means, how it is used, and what the form is. When discussing language functions, students will learn functions such as inviting, refusing, agreeing, disagreeing, etc. The instructor should choose a teaching method that works best for each of these topics, either the straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork approach.
