In this unit I learned that materials used by teachers can be divided into two types, authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are items that a native speaker would usually listen to or read. They were not produced with an English language learner in mind. However, created material are items made by a teacher that are geared towards the aims and goals of the EFL lessons. These materials can formatted to meet the needs of most students within an EFL classroom.
Students and teachers have expressed a love hate relationship with course books. Like any other aspect of teaching their are several things that a teacher should consider before selecting course books. Factors such as price- will the students be able to afford them, methodology- can the content be used appropriately with the preferred teaching style of the teacher, is there a balance between the skills, are the topics relevant to the students' language level and learning experience and design- will it appeal to the students and teacher.
In conclusion I believe that authentic and created materials can be used in conjunction with course books. I think that they both have their place in the classroom, and an EFL teacher can strike a balance between both giving students the opportunity to be exposed to both.
