There are several different tests at different stages in a course:
- Placement / Diagnostic tests are given at the start to determine the level of students and place them into the correct class according to their language ability.
- Progress tests should be given periodically, these tests are useful to the teachers and students know what language items need more work. These tests also help to encourage students to review and revise their skills.
- Practice tests generally follow the format and structure of the external examination that is being given in preparation for.
- External tests are usually given by organizations ( universities, colleges, employers..) to measure the ability of non-native English speaking to use English in everyday work or schools activities.
