Receptive skills, reading and listening, are a basic part of learning a foreign language. Learners need to have certain skills, such as predictive skills and the abilities to scan for specific information, skim for general ideas, and deduce meaning from context, in order to achieve comprehension of a text or dialogue. Teachers should choose a variety of topics throughout all receptive skills lessons to appeal to and engage students' different interests. Teachers should also make sure the materials, either authentic or non-authentic, are appropriate to the students' level. It is important that tasks promote comprehension rather than simply check it.
I really like that last point, promote don't check comprehension. If students always read or listen to something of which they understand 100%, they will not truly be learning. By including some new vocabulary or phrases in texts or dialogues, teachers can encourage students to think for themselves and deduce the meaning of new English. Activating and engaging the students' minds will improve their English skills. Also, when students are able to comprehend something new, especially by themselves, their confidence will increase.
