When I read this unit the first time I was very intimidated, because I had never learned the phonetic symbols before and did not know how I would teach English students different pronounciations and was overwhelmed by the way so many differently spelled words make the same sound, and similarly spelled words make different sounds. After reading through the unit, doing the practice exercises, and watching the class demonstration video I feel so much better. I really enjoyed the exercises of translating the phonetic script, I actually find it really fun! I would have liked to see more in the video about how to teach intonation in the class, but I know in the unit you suggested using nonsense words, hand gestures, humming/singing, and making marks on the board.
Stress was the easiest to understand and I think it would be easier to teach because you can show the same sentence and stress certain words based on different contexts.
It was also interesting to learn about sound joining, which is so common and I do it all the time but had never really thought about it like that, and so now I will notice linking, sound dropping, sound changing, and extra lettering.
