This unit on theories, methods, and techniques describes the evolution of second language teaching theory, explaining the grammatical-translation approach, an audio-lingual approach, the incorporation of methods where practicing communication and fluency becomes as important as correct grammar up to the present model of engage, study and activate. This is interesting for me with my history of audio-lingual success in both learning and teaching foreign languages. I generally teach Business English in very small classes with lots of self-correction. I am beginning to see that some periods of the lesson should be without correction so that students can practice improvising to convey meaning and develop confidence in their communication skills. I do a good job of making people feel comfortable with correcting themselves and repeating the corrections, but in real life, grammatically correct communication generally only ever happens with some native speakers.
